Post Haste

Birds are barking at my morning window.

What do they want of me?

I’m up! Albeit begrudgingly.

I sit, knees stuffed into this ridiculously small desk,

sipping black coffee, nibbling dry toast, thinking of you…

You bought this piece of doll-house furniture, in love with its roll-top.

Only you, only you.

Why do I choose to breakfast here rather than on the perfectly good table?

Oh, you know. It’s because I miss you so.

Do come home post haste, won’t you?

I think the birds miss you too

and that’s what they’re on about

outside my morning window.

  1. Indeed, sometimes it is nice to know that natural creatures have the capacity of missing as well! Kind of poignant thinking of the scene from that perspective.

    1. Hi Mary. Thanks for stopping by. What if even the inanimate can miss? Like my car misses me when I don't drive for a while... :)

  3. I think we find ways to cope when we really miss someone... maybe we notice the birds... lovely longing.

    1. Well Sherry, I don't. At the moment. But it is lovely, isn't it? I hope to feel it again someday. For now, I can imagine...

When one misses a loved one it is good to get a sympathetic ear from another living thing. They might not even realize it!

  7. Oh this is absolutely exquisite writing here, Meester :) we do tend to miss our loved ones when they aren't near. Loved the bit about the birds going on about it outside the window. I believe it too ❤️
